Last week, on the eve of International Children's Day, Dina Makarenko, director of the Sun of Hope Foundation, visited the children's oncology department of the National Centre for Maternity and Childhood Protection. A master class on making candles from wax, part of the "Smile to the Sun" project, was held for the young patients. Many children were receiving treatment at the beginning of the event, but gradually, the playroom filled with children and their parents.
We were delighted to see our old friends, including little Aylin and her mom Akgul, who attended the workshop. They are thrilled that the little girl is on the road to recovery. Although they don't know when they will be able to go home, her mom believes that the day is just around the corner. We also had the pleasure of hosting Ominochka, a very friendly and creative girl.
The children eagerly participated in making candles. They chose the colours of wax, twisted wicks, and selected decorations. Little Billy decided to depict his mother on a candle. He carefully cut out small details and attached hair from a jute rope. He intended the candle to be a gift for his beloved mother and made cute comments throughout the process. Another girl was so enthusiastic about decorating her candle that she covered it with animal figures. Each child showed creativity and found a little distraction from the hospital routine.
"And we were not left without a gift. Omina, who made several candles, decided to give one of them to us. Later, Omina's mum Dilafruz, wrote that the little girl had not got out of bed for a week and was in a terrible mood, but after our masterclass, her mood was great for the first time in a long time. And this is the best gift for us!"- Dina Makarenko, Director of the Sun of Hope Foundation, told us.
Thank you to everyone who helps our programme projects to develop. Let us support the beneficiaries of the ‘Smile at the Sun’ programme together and offer our care! A child needs to feel that childhood continues despite illness. Join us! Let's share our care and love with children!
