Maksat has been bedridden for almost a month, but he continues to fight

01.07.2025 09:00

Imagine a little boy named Maksat who has been living in complete isolation for a month. He has no toys, no friends, and no outings—just a sterile box, silence, white walls, and his mother by his side day and night. This is Maxat's life after a bone marrow transplant.

Maksat hardly gets out of bed because he is too weak. Occasionally, he gathers enough strength to stand for a few minutes, but he soon has to lie down again, exhausted and drained of energy.

Today, Maksat received some encouraging news: for the first time, his neutrophil count— which measures the cells that protect the body from infection—has risen to 0.53, just above the minimum threshold. If he can maintain this count for three days, he will be able to leave the isolation room. This is the first positive news he has had in a long time.

Maksat hardly eats anything, only consuming food he particularly enjoys. Most of the time, he is fed through an IV. While the diarrhoea has stopped, he has not yet regained his strength, and all his hair has fallen out. The bone marrow puncture has not been performed yet; it will only be clear next week how well the donor bone marrow has taken root. Everything depends on this, according to the boy's mother.

Every day is a struggle and a waiting game for Maksat and his mother, Erkezhan. They both miss their home, family, and the normal life they used to have. The only way they connect with the outside world is through video calls.

Their most important goal right now is to hold on, and for that, they need everything: medicine, food, and constant medical supervision.

Support Maksat. Any contribution, no matter how small, is a step toward helping him get back on his feet so that his mother can see the smile on his face again.
